COMPUTER IMAGING

Also Known As: Digital Imaging

What is Computer Imaging?

One of the newest developments in the world of plastic surgery is the use of computer imaging. Also known as digital imaging, plastic surgery computer imaging allows the patient to visualize the potential that a plastic surgery can offer.

Computer imaging is an advanced discipline of computer science, which manipulates digital images. It involves several disciplines (digital photography, scanning, composition and manipulation of graphics) following precision with every step.

Computer or digital imaging is usually used in during the consultation of plastic surgeries. It can be used in liposuction, breast augmentation, facial resurfacing, nose surgery or tummy tuck for the patient to get a visual of the possible result of a procedure.

Benefits of Computer Imaging in Plastic Surgery

Aside from the fact that you will get a picture of you with a more proportion nose, larger breasts, tighter abdomen, smoother face or improved contour, Computer imaging will also provide a better communication with the patient and cosmetic surgeon.

Since you will be able to see the desired features you wish to change on a computer screen, you will immediately appreciate the benefits of cosmetic surgery. In addition, you will be able to share your preferences on what and what not to change, resulting in a more realistic expectation.

Computer imaging gives the patient a better understanding of what the plastic surgery can achieve.

How does Computer Imaging work?

A computer imaging is usually done during the first consultation. It is done by getting a digital photograph of the patient. The picture is then scanned into the computer and altered by the doctor and patient to estimate the desired post-operative results.

Various scenarios can be displayed to demonstrate the patient’s desired surgical outcome. However, the most commonly used digital imaging technique is the computer-generated before and after picture.

When the pictures have been generated, the surgeon and patient will be able to communicate the desired goals. On the other hand, a patient may also be able to back out from the surgery if he or she finds the outcome inappropriate.

Costs of Computer Imaging

The cost of a digital imaging for plastic surgery consultation is based on what kind of plastic surgery is needed. In general, the costs of computer imaging may range from $15 to $50, including two views.

Issues of Computer Imaging in Plastic Surgerye Results

Today, many cosmetic surgeons provide computer imaging during consultation. Although this may give a boost on the surgeon’s credibility, it may also provide possible legal liabilities.

Some experts believe that computer imaging done for plastic surgery may be exploited by novice surgeons and used as a marketing tool. On the contrary, surgeons who perform digital imaging with precaution reduce the risks of legal claims.

Since digital imaging allows the patient to see the possible results prior to any plastic surgery, a patient may get high hopes and eventually receive results that are not similar to the computer-generated pictures. If this happens, the surgeon may face claims of failure to instruct, malpractice and implied contract.

However, since digital imaging provides many benefits to the world of plastic surgery, many surgeons still use them, with simple safeguards, as a tool for the patient’s awareness of procedure.
